Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is the surgical field working on correction of body image and elimination of congenital or acquired anomalies, shape and functional disorders. The word “Plastic” originates from “plasticos” in Greek and means “to give shape”, “to make up”. The word “reconstructive” is of Latin origin and means “redo”.
Conditions which damage shape and functions of the body may be due to traumatic or acquired reasons. For example; congenital cleft palate- lip, syndactylia, vascular masses (hemangioma etc.), traumatic burns, traffic accident related facial injuries, various cuts and organ ruptures, various acquired skin and soft tissue tumors, chronic wounds are handled under that surgical discipline field. Bone (especially facial- cranial and hand bones) and cartilages (such as ear and nose cartilages), deformities, pathologic conditions (tumors, parasites, infection etc.) are under plastic surgery’s field of interest. Microsurgery may benefit from laser systems, endoscopy as well as various chemical agents and medications. Briefly, Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery aims to repair defects which affects subcutaneous bones of the body. Basic rule is to repair lost tissues with similar tissues.
